Tiago Cardoso Mendes (born 2 May 1981), usually simply Tiago or Tiago Mendes, is a Portuguese international midfielder who played for Chelsea from 2004-2005. Signed by José Mourinho, Tiago was part of the 2004-05 Premier League-winning side, and was an unused substitute for the 2005 League Cup Final.

Before Chelsea

Tiago started his career at Portuguese side Braga, becoming a mainstay of the side while still a teenager during the 2000-01 season, helping his team qualify for the UEFA Cup.

At the end of 2001 Tiago's displays earned him a move to Benfica where he enhanced his reputation by contributing 13 goals during the 2002-03 season, helping his side to second place in the league. The following season he helped Benfica to victory in the Portuguese Cup Final, beating José Mourinho's Porto side in extra time.

Chelsea career

Tiago joined Chelsea from Benfica in July 2004 for a fee of around £8m.[1] Having missed the first game of Chelsea's 2004–05 campaign, Tiago made his debut as a half time substitute against Birmingham City, and started the following game against Crystal Palace, scoring the second goal in a 2-0 victory with a neat turn and shot. Goals against Fulham and Bolton Wanderers followed in November, and the Portuguese appeared regularly for the Blues over the rest of the season, though he was often used as a subsitute. Tiago capped his first season in England with a spectacular long-range equaliser in Chelsea's 3-1 win over Manchester United on 10 May 2005 at Old Trafford, the Blues already having won the Premier League title.

Despite his successful first season, the arrival of Michael Essien from Olympique Lyonnais prior to the 2005-06 season threatened to limit Tiago's appearances, and the Portuguese midfielder chose to move in the opposite direction, signing for Lyon for £6.8m in August 2005.

After Chelsea

After helping Lyon retain the Ligue 1 championship in 2006 and 2007, Tiago signed for Juventus. An average debut season at Juventus cost him his place in the first team, and having failed to make an impact in Italy, Tiago joined Atlético Madrid on loan for the second half of the 2009-10 season. A second loan deal with the Spanish side was agreed prior to the 2010-11 season. [2]
