The 2012 FA Cup Final took place on 5th May 2012, contested between six-time winners Chelsea and seven-time winners Liverpool at Wembley Stadium. It was the eleventh time Chelsea had reached the final, and resulted in their seventh win. It was the Blues' fourth FA Cup title in six years and their sixth victory in fifteen years.
The win also resulted in various personal records in the final for Chelsea's players. John Terry became the first player to captain the same club to the trophy four times, Ashley Cole extended the record for most FA Cup-winners medals, with seven in total (four while at Chelsea), and Didier Drogba became the first player to score in four FA Cup finals (winning each time, in every one he appeared in). Chelsea were led by interim manager Roberto Di Matteo, who had scored in two FA Cup finals for Chelsea at Wembley, most memorably in the 1997 Final, when he scored after just 42 seconds.
After a cagey opening 10 minutes Ramires opened the scoring for Chelsea, the Brazilian received a pass from Juan Mata and held off Liverpool fullback José Enrique while on a trademark driving run from midfield before wrong-footing Pepe Reina with a near post strike. Chelsea had the better of the first half, but failed to create many chances to extend their lead.
Six minutes into the second half Didier Drogba doubled Chelsea's lead, scoring a record fourth goal in four FA Cup finals. The Ivorian received a pass from Frank Lampard inside the Liverpool area and shifted the ball onto his left foot before striking the ball confidently across Pepe Reina from an angle, finding the far corner. Chelsea now appeared in control of the match, threatening to score a third on the break, but Liverpool revived their hopes in the 64th minute, substitute Andy Carroll finishing well after a blocked clearance from José Bosingwa arrived at his feet in the Chelsea area. Liverpool were on top for the remainder of the match, as they pressed for an equaliser. Andy Carroll came very close to scoring a second goal in the last ten minutes, Petr Čech saving superbly from underneath his crossbar to claw away the ball and push Carroll's header onto the underside of the bar and out. The Liverpool players and fans celebrated, believing the ball had crossed the line, but referee Phil Dowd correctly waved play on, with replays subsequently suggesting that the entire ball had not crossed the line. Liverpool continued to press for an equaliser to send the match into extra time, but Chelsea held on to win the trophy for the seventh time.
