André Schürrle is a German international who played for Chelsea from 2013 until February 2015. He joined from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2013 and returned to Germany a year and a half later when he signed for Wolfsburg. He played in various forward positions while at Stamford Bridge, and was a consistent goal threat, but ultimately failed to hold down a regular starting position, with 30 of his 65 appearances coming as a substitute. In 2014 Schürrle won the FIFA World Cup, becoming the first player since Frank Leboeuf to do so while at Chelsea.

Before Chelsea

1. FSV Mainz

Born in Ludwigshafen, Schürrle was a youth player at local side Ludwigshafener SC before joining the youth team at nearby 1. FSV Mainz 05 in 2006. Part of a successful youth team that won the Under-19 Fußball-Bundesliga in 2009, Schürrle would soon make his first team debut, appearing on the opening day of the 2009-10 season as an 18-year-old in a match against Bayer Leverkusen. The young forward remained a fixture of the side over the course of the season, scoring five goals and helping Mainz to a ninth-place finish. Schürrle had made enough of an impression in his debut season to attract attention from Bayer Leverkusen, and it was announced by Mainz in September 2010 that the youngster would join their Bundesliga rivals at the end of the 2010-11 season, having agreed a fee reported to be in the region of €8 million. In his final season at Mainz Schürrle was his side's star player, contributing fifteen goals as the club finished in fifth place.

Bayer Leverkusen

Schürrle completed his move to Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the 2011-12 season, signing a five-year contract. He was a regular starter during his first season in Leverkusen, scoring nine goals in 40 appearances in all competitions, despite being fielded in a wider position than had been the case at Mainz. Still just 21, his form drew interest from Chelsea in the summer of 2012. Although Bayer Leverkusen were unwilling to sell, Schürrle admitted that he would favour a move to west London should the opportunity arise. [1]

The forward's contribution in the 2012-13 season bettered his first, 14 goals and 9 assists an return impressive for a young player in a strong league which provided both of that season's UEFA Champions League finalists. Chelsea's continued interest had led to another attempt to sign the German international towards the end of the season, with negotiations taking place in April 2013. [2]

Chelsea career

On 13 June 2013 Chelsea confirmed that an agreement had been reached with Bayer Leverkusen, and within two weeks the transfer had been completed for a reported fee of £18m, with Schürrle signing a five-year contract. [3]

International

Having represented his country at Under-19 and Under-21 levels, Schürrle made his full international debut in November 2010, coming on as a substitute in a match against Sweden. In the process he became the first German international player to be born in reunified Germany, along with Mario Götze, who was brought on at the same time. He scored his first goal for Germany the following May, in a 2-1 win against Uruguay.
