Robert Dennis "Danny" Blanchflower (10 February 1926 - 9 December 1993) was a former Northern Ireland player and manager, who managed Chelsea. He replaced Ken Shellito at the Bridge in 1978. The appointment was unexpected; Blanchflower had worked as a journalist since his retirement from playing in 1964 and his only managerial experience had been a short stint with Northern Ireland. Blanchflower's stay at the Bridge was a very short one, the club won only five games under him during the season, which eventually led to relegation and Blanchflower leaving his job after only nine months. He did not manage any team after Chelsea, but continued to work in football with Sunday Express until 1988 [1]. Danny Blanchflower died on 9 December 1993 in Cobham, Surrey.
