Before Chelsea

Zappacosta began his professional career in Italy with lower-division club Isola Liri before rising through the ranks at Atalanta. His strong performances earned him a move to Torino in 2015, where he developed into an energetic and attacking full-back. Known for his pace, crossing, and work rate, he impressed in Serie A and earned a few caps for the Italian national team. His form convinced Antonio Conte to bring him to Chelsea late in the 2017 summer transfer window.

Chelsea career

2017–18 Season

Signed on deadline day, Zappacosta provided depth at right wing-back behind Victor Moses. He made a strong impression with a spectacular goal on his Champions League debut against Qarabağ. Though not a regular starter, he featured frequently in cup competitions and rotated in the league. He came on as a late substitute in the FA Cup Final win over Manchester United.

2018–19 Season

Under Maurizio Sarri, Zappacosta fell down the pecking order behind César Azpilicueta and was mainly used in domestic cup matches. He made only 4 league appearances but contributed in Chelsea’s successful Europa League campaign, including starts in earlier rounds. Though unused in the final, he collected a winner’s medal as Chelsea beat Arsenal 4–1 in Baku.

Loans and departure

After falling out of favour at Chelsea following his first two seasons, Davide Zappacosta spent the next two years on loan in Serie A. He joined AS Roma in 2019, but his season was derailed by a serious ACL injury shortly after arrival, limiting him to just a handful of appearances. The following year, he moved to Genoa, where he enjoyed a much more productive spell—playing regularly and showcasing his attacking qualities with several goals and assists. His performances at Genoa helped rebuild his reputation, ultimately leading to a permanent move to Atalanta in 2021 and bringing his time at Chelsea to an end.

In May 2016, Zappacosta was called up by coach Antonio Conte as part of Italy’s provisional Euro 2016 squad and later named a reserve. He made his international debut on 12 November 2016, starting as right back in a World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein.
