Before Chelsea
Jorginho began his professional career at Hellas Verona, rising through the Italian football ranks before making his name at Napoli under Maurizio Sarri. There, he became a cornerstone of Sarri’s possession-based system, known for his sharp passing, press resistance, and positional intelligence. When Sarri joined Chelsea in 2018, Jorginho followed him to Stamford Bridge as a marquee signing to implement the same style in the Premier League.
Chelsea career
2018–19 Season
Jorginho was immediately installed as the heartbeat of Maurizio Sarri’s midfield. While his passing metronome role was praised by some, he also faced criticism for being overly conservative and defensively limited. Nonetheless, he was ever-present, helping Chelsea finish 3rd in the league and win the Europa League, starting in the final against Arsenal.
2019–20 Season
Under Frank Lampard, Jorginho retained a regular role and even became vice-captain. His goal tally rose due to his reliable penalty-taking, and he contributed leadership and control in midfield as Chelsea blooded a younger squad. Though his form dipped post-lockdown, he remained an important figure.
2020–21 Season
After initially being phased out by Frank Lampard, Jorginho regained prominence under Thomas Tuchel. He was instrumental in Chelsea’s Champions League-winning run, controlling games with maturity and calmness. His penalty against Atlético Madrid and composed display in the final against Man City were highlights.
2021–22 Season
Jorginho remained a central figure in midfield, especially in the absence of N'golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic. He continued to shoulder penalty duties and was key to Chelsea’s success in the Super Cup and Club World Cup. While fatigue and minor injuries affected consistency, he still played a vital role across competitions.
2022–23 Season
Amid Chelsea's turbulent season, Jorginho featured regularly during the first half of the campaign. With the club undergoing transition and bringing in new midfielders, he opted to join Arsenal in January 2023 in a surprise move across London.
