Once the regular season had finished, the London Combination Committee decided to put on a few more matches with the proceeds going towards the National War Fund. Whether it was pure luck or by design, Chelsea, winners of the League, met Tottenham Hotspur, fourth in the League, in the first two games on a home and away basis, and then played West Ham United, who had finished as runners-up, in home and away matches the following two weeks.
