Pre-Chelsea career

Ruben joined Chelsea at Under-8 level.

Chelsea career

Ruben made his Under-18 debut as an Under-15 in March 2013 and was something of a regular in 2013-14, training with the academy on a full-time basis as part of the early scholarship programme. He demonstrated his versatility by lining up at right-back on occasion and proved an effective, level-headed experience in an increasingly younger team late in the season.

He was one of the leading Under-18 appearance makers throughout 2014-15, often captaining the youth team and working his way very deservedly into the team for the decisive rounds of the FA Youth Cup. He chipped in with a few appearances en route to a double success in the UEFA Youth League and capped a very fine season with Under-21 appearances to close things out.

That trend continued in 2015-16 as he became a double winner again, playing a feature role in the Youth Cup and adding a few outings in the UEFA Youth League but was generally an Under-18 mainstay before graduating to Under-21 football under Adi Viveash at the end of the year, playing six times. That progress continued in 2016-17, where he played more often than not, taking over the captaincy from Fankaty Dabo in the second half of the season when the young full-back went on loan, whilst also making his Scotland Under-21 debut.

He made a team-high 29 Development Squad appearances in 2017-18 for a team that reached the Checkatrade Trophy Semi Finals, before signing a new one-year deal in June 2018 and joining Scottish Championship side Falkirk on a season-long loan. That deal was terminated in January and, with no new club on the horizon, he was released at the end of the campaign.

International

Ruben has been capped by Scotland up to Under-21 level, but is also eligible for England and Malta.
