Sam joined Chelsea from Coleraine, where he spent his junior career.
Chelsea career
Sam settled straight into the heart of the Chelsea defence at Under-18 level, making 20 appearances in his first year at the club, before captaining the youth team in his second campaign. As he moved into Development Squad football in 2021 and 2022, foot injuries curtailed his progress somewhat but, when on the pitch, he was a dependable leader and old-school defender who parlayed those traits into a highly successful first senior loan at League Two Barrow in 2022-23. He departed Chelsea as a free agent at the end of that campaign.
International
Sam has represented Northern Ireland up to senior level, making his full international debut against Ukraine in June 2021.
