Before Chelsea

Early career

Rosenior enjoyed a solid professional playing career spanning nearly two decades, representing clubs such as Fulham, Reading, Birmingham City, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Hull City. Operating mainly as a right-back, he was valued for his tactical awareness, consistency, and leadership rather than individual flair. At Brighton, he was part of the squad that achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2017, an experience that exposed him to modern coaching structures and high-performance environments.

While still a player, Rosenior began preparing for life after retirement by completing his coaching badges and taking on developmental roles. His intellectual approach, communication skills, and calm authority made his transition into coaching a natural progression rather than a sudden shift.

Rosenior’s first significant coaching exposure came at Derby County, where he worked on the first-team staff during a period of severe financial instability. In 2022, he was appointed caretaker manager following Wayne Rooney’s departure. Despite points deductions, limited resources, and off-field uncertainty, Rosenior earned widespread praise for maintaining professionalism, tactical organisation, and competitive spirit. Although relegation was unavoidable, his handling of the situation significantly elevated his standing within the game.

Later in 2022, Rosenior was appointed head coach of Hull City. At Hull, he quickly implemented a structured, possession-oriented style of football built on controlled build-up, positional discipline, and player development. Over the next two seasons, Hull became one of the Championship’s most tactically coherent sides, narrowly missing out on the play-offs in 2023–24. Rosenior’s work was widely admired for its clarity, bravery in style, and improvement of individual players, reinforcing his reputation as a coach aligned with modern European principles.

In the summer of 2024, Rosenior took a significant step in his career by moving abroad to become head coach of RC Strasbourg. The appointment represented both a personal and professional evolution, as he joined a club operating within the Chelsea ownership network and undergoing a strategic rebuild focused on youth development and modern coaching ideas.

At Strasbourg, Rosenior was tasked with stabilising a young squad, implementing a clear footballing identity, and improving league competitiveness in Ligue 1. His early tenure focused on structural organisation, controlled possession, and tactical discipline, mirroring the principles he had developed in England. Working in a new cultural and tactical environment accelerated his growth as a coach and enhanced his reputation as a manager capable of adapting his ideas beyond the English football system.

Chelsea

Rosenior’s work at Strasbourg brought him into closer alignment with Chelsea’s long-term sporting vision. He joined the club as a head coach on 6 January 2026.
