Before Chelsea

Born in the former Yugoslavia, in an area that is now in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Marin's parents moved to Germany when he was two years old.

He was a youth player at SG 01 Hoechst and Eintracht Frankfurt before moving to the Borussia Mönchengladbach academy. He made his professional debut for the club on 31 March 2007, having recently turned 18. He made his full international debut in May 2008 and after another impressive season at Mönchengladbach he joined Werder Bremen on 24 June 2009 for a fee of €8.5m. Having started his career in Bremen well, he spent much of his third season at the club injured as his career failed to develop quite as his early promise suggested it would. [1]

On 28 April 2012 Chelsea announced that Marin would join the club at the end of the 2011-12 season for an undisclosed fee, reported to be in the region of £6.5m (€8m). [2] The winger had one season left on his existing contract.

Chelsea career

A relatively low profile signing, Marin was signed prior to the end of the 2011-12 season when failure to qualify for the following season's UEFA Champions League was a distinct possibility. After Chelsea did secure qualification by winning the competition, which also enhanced the club's reputation as one of Europe's top sides, the squad was bolstered by the signing of highly sought after players such as Eden Hazard and Oscar for large transfer fees. With Victor Moses also joining Marin faced intense competition for a place in the side, and despite Chelsea playing a record 69 matches over the course of the season, the German made just 16 appearances, over two thirds of which came as a substitute. He only goal of the season came at the start of February, the winger capping a 4-1 win against Wigan Athletic with a late strike.

Prior to the 2013-14 season he joined Sevilla on a season-long loan, the signing of compatriot André Schürrle having reduced the German's first team opportunities further. [3] He started with two goals in the Europa League qualifiers but suffered an injury in October which sidelined him up until the turn of the year. His involvement thereafter was sporadic although he did appear briefly in the club's Europa League Final win over Benfica.

On August 18th 2014 he joined Fiorentina on loan for the 2014-15 season but was unable to feature before late October due to injury. Restricted to a handful of Europa League appearances, he swapped one purple club for another in January when he joined Anderlecht for the rest of the campaign, but another injury ended his season prematurely. Trabzonspor in Turkey was his next move and, by comparison, it proved fairly successful as he kept injuries to a minimum and contributed effectively to the tune of four goals in almost thirty appearances.

International

Marin appeared several times for Germany Under-21s, before making his debut for the full national side at the age of 19 in a 2-2 draw against Belarus in the run up to Euro 2008. He was included in Joachim Löw's provisional squad for the tournament but didn't make the final squad. Prior to the 2010 World Cup Marin was again included in Germany's provisional squad, but this time made the final cut. He made two substitute appearances in the tournament, but had not subsequently appeared for his country at the time he joined Chelsea, having suffered injuries and a loss of form at club level.
