Before Chelsea
Fàbregas made his name as a teenager at Arsenal, becoming club captain and one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders. After eight years in North London, he returned to Barcelona in 2011, where he won La Liga, Copa del Rey, and other domestic honours. Despite individual success, his role was sometimes inconsistent, and in 2014 he returned to England - signing for Arsenal’s rivals, Chelsea, under José Mourinho.
Chelsea career
Fàbregas completed his move to Chelsea on 18 July 2014 for a reported fee of €33m (£26.6m) [1], signing a five-year contract.
2014–15 Season
Fàbregas made an immediate impact, forming a superb partnership with Nemanja Matić. His creativity and passing range transformed Chelsea’s midfield, highlighted by a stunning assist to André Schürrle on his league debut against Burnley. He led the Premier League in assists and was instrumental in Chelsea’s title-winning season and League Cup triumph. It was one of his finest individual seasons.
2015–16 Season
Like many teammates, Fàbregas endured a sharp dip in form during Chelsea’s disastrous title defence. He remained a regular starter and had brief spells of strong form under interim manager Gus Hiddink, but Chelsea finished 10th, their worst Premier League campaign in two decades.
2016–17 Season
Under Conte’s new 3-4-3 system, Fàbregas was often used as a substitute but made decisive contributions—delivering key assists and goals. Despite fewer starts, he was among the league’s most productive midfielders per minute. Chelsea won the Premier League title, and Fàbregas played an important role in the run-in.
2017–18 Season
With a more regular starting role again, Fàbregas was central to Chelsea’s midfield playmaking. Although the team underperformed in the league, finishing 5th, he helped the Blues lift the FA Cup, playing the full 90 minutes in key knockout matches (though not in the final).
2018–19 Season
Under Maurizio Sarri, Fàbregas was behind Jorginho in the deep-lying playmaker role and saw limited minutes. In January 2019, he played his final match for Chelsea in the FA Cup, leaving the field in tears to a standing ovation. Shortly after, he transferred to Monaco in Ligue 1 to seek regular football.
International
Cesc Fàbregas had a distinguished international career with Spain, earning over 100 caps between 2006 and 2016. He played key roles in Spain’s golden era, helping the team win UEFA Euro 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and Euro 2012. Though often used as a substitute, he contributed crucial assists and scored decisive penalties, including the winning one in the Euro 2008 quarter-final shootout against Italy. Fàbregas was known for his vision and composure, making him a vital squad member during Spain’s historic run of dominance.
