Pre-Chelsea career

Jake joined Chelsea as an Under-9.

Chelsea career

Jake made his Under-18 debut in December 2013 whilst still an Under-16 and scored his first youth team goal two months later in a home match against Arsenal. His relatively late breakthrough into youth team football owed much to a long-term injury suffered a season earlier but he made up for lost time by slotting into the FA Youth Cup squad at the Semi Final stage and retaining his place at centre-back all the way to lifting the trophy.

He was named as Under-18 captain ahead of the 2014-15 campaign and played extremely well in the first half of the season, leading to a promotion to the Under-21 squad on a full-time basis. At the heart of the FA Youth Cup and 2014-15 UEFA Youth League successes, he earned rave reviews and joined the first team squad on a post-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

Andreas Christensen's departure on loan meant Jake was promoted to the first-team squad on a permanent basis in 2015-16 but he continued to feature extensively at youth level, captaining a victorious FA Youth Cup side to a third consecutive success and ensuring that he and Jay Dasilva became part of a select group of just seven players to ever win three Youth Cups. A second UEFA Youth League winners' medal also followed and his season was capped when he made his first-team debut away to Aston Villa in April 2016.

He joined Bristol Rovers on loan ahead of the 2016-17 season, featuring 13 times overall in a campaign where he missed five months through injury after suffering a broken arm and dislocated elbow in a match against Charlton Athletic in November 2016. He then spent the first half of the 2017-18 season at Chelsea, making just one League Cup appearance, before going to Sunderland on loan in January and enduring a tough spell with the eventually relegated Black Cats.

International

Jake has appeared at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 levels for England, including at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in May 2017.
