Futebol Clube do Porto, commonly known as FC Porto, Porto, or FCP, is a Portuguese football team from the city of Porto (sometimes referred to as Oporto in English), in the northern region of the country. Founded in Porto in 28 September 1893, it is one of the Três Grandes, or Big Three, football clubs in Portugal, along with Sport Lisboa e Benfica and Sporting Clube de Portugal.

In addition to multiple domestic titles, the Portuguese club has also experienced European success, becoming the first Portuguese side to win the European Cup in 1987, before following a UEFA Cup win in 2003 with a second victory in Europe's premier club competition, beating Monaco in 2004.

Following their 2004 Champions League victory, manager José Mourinho joined Chelsea, and signed two of his most reliable players from his former club shortly afterwards; Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira. Henrique Hilário would also join from the Portuguese side as a backup goalkeeper. Chelsea also signed José Bosingwa from Porto after Mourinho's departure; and former-Porto player Deco also signed in 2008, from Barcelona. Chelsea's first match against Porto followed shortly after Mourinho joined the Blues. The two sides were drawn against each other in the 2004-05 UEFA Champions League group stage, with both teams winning at home. The two clubs met again in the 2006-07 UEFA Champions League, this time in the first knockout round, with Chelsea prevailing 3-2 on aggregate, before the sides were again drawn against each other in the group stage, in 2009-10, with Chelsea winning 1-0 home and away. Prior to the 2010-11 season another Porto manager joined Chelsea, with André Villas-Boas joining the club along with staff members José Mario Rocha and Daniel Sousa.
