Before Chelsea

Robert Sánchez began his professional career at Brighton & Hove Albion, having joined their youth setup in 2013. He spent loan spells at Forest Green Rovers and Rochdale in the lower leagues before breaking into Brighton’s first team during the 2020–21 season under Graham Potter. Sánchez quickly earned a reputation as a composed, modern goalkeeper with strong shot-stopping and distribution. He became Brighton’s No.1. However, in 2022–23, he lost his starting spot to Jason Steele and sought a move for more regular football.

Chelsea career

2023–24 Season

Sánchez joined Chelsea ahead of the 2023–24 season as part of the club’s squad overhaul under Mauricio Pochettino, initially competing with Kepa Arrizabalaga—who soon left on loan. Sánchez was installed as the new first-choice goalkeeper, starting the season opener against Liverpool. He produced some solid performances in the early weeks but also displayed moments of inconsistency, particularly with his decision-making under pressure and ball distribution. In December, he suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for several months, during which time Djordje Petrović emerged as a reliable replacement. Upon returning, Sánchez found himself as the backup for the remainder of the season. He finished the campaign with 21 appearances in all competitions, keeping 5 clean sheets. Despite a promising start, the season ended with questions about his long-term role in Chelsea’s goalkeeping hierarchy.

2024–25 Season

Sánchez was retained as the club’s starting goalkeeper under new manager Enzo Maresca. He began the campaign as Chelsea’s number one and started the majority of the early league and European fixtures. However, individual mistakes began to mount midway through the season, leading to public criticism and pressure. Despite this, Maresca continued to back him, valuing his command of the area and ability to play from the back. He capped off the season by keeping another clean sheet in the Club World Cup final win over PSG, where he was awarded the tournament’s Golden Glove.
